About this collection

Welcome to a selection of 25 representative digital images from the Constance Evangeline Weiss Winkleman Papers.  The entire collection is about 150 items, comprised of letters, announcements, certificates, newspaper clippings and black and white family photos (pictures by professional photographers are not displayed in this selection), dating  from 1907 to the 1950’s.  The collection tells the story of a young woman from Sewickley, Pennsylvania, a small town in the countryside along the Ohio River, just outside Pittsburgh.  Constance Evangeline Weiss (6/9/1916-12/14/1997) attended Sewickley Valley schools and was the first in her family to go to college.  In 1938 she graduated, with honors, from Hood College, a woman’s college in Frederick, Maryland, with a B.S. in Home Economics, to pursue a career as a dietician (nutritionist and meal planner) in institutional food service.   Miss Weiss married Navy vet Edward Winkleman (8/16/1913-8/31/1981) in 1947 and they lived in Southern California.  They had one son, Edward Douglas Winkleman II (b. 10/18/1957).  Mrs. Winkleman passed away in Duarte, California, in 1997.
