Buddhist Churches of America

This collection of documents and photographs is from an archive of the Buddhist Churches of America that was entrusted to the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles. The museum received this collection of letters, photographs, and administrative papers in 1998 from the Buddhist Churches of America, documenting their history from 1899 to the present day. Twenty five items were selected that date from the 1920s until 1952.  Care was taken to select items of a personal nature that reflect some of the difficulties that Buddhist Japanese Americans experienced while practicing their religion in the first of half of the 20th century. Featured items include a handwritten copy of a sermon given by Bishop Matsukage to internees at Topaz on the event of their departure. I hope you find the collection illuminating.
